MetrioPharm AG: Lead compound MP1031 proves better than gold standard

Zurich / Berlin, 25 May 2011.

A preclinical study, sponsored by MetrioPharm, showed that the company's anti-inflammatory lead compound MP1031 had a higher efficacy than anti-TNF alpha antibodies. Anti-TNF antibodies are the current gold standard treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. According to the study that was conducted in the UK, MP1031 reached maximum efficacy after only 30 min and a more prolonged effect compared to standard medication. A single dose of MP1031 maintained its full effect over a period of at least six hours, whereas the full effect of an anti-TNF antibody in the same model lasts only 3 to 4 hours.

"The quick onset and prolonged efficacy combined with a very low rate of side effects demonstrates the great potential for MP1031 in the market of potent anti-inflammatory drugs, which today is dominated by anti-TNF alpha biologicals." commented Dr. Wolfgang Brysch, president and head of research and development at MetrioPharm AG. "The results of this study clearly surpassed our expectations. The very favorable side – effects profile combined with affordable costs for the drug compound comprise major milestones towards the future registration and marketing of this drug."
